Experience our great summer program! Many of our museums are open so you can come and see the exhibits yourself, in addition we have a variety of guided tours and hikes outside (in Norwegian), for both adults and families (where we pay special attention to children, but the guided tours are also suitable for adults).

Guided tours and hikes are offered with a very limited number of tickets due to infection control, so be sure to pre-book your ticket to be sure to get a seat!

Bergenhus Festning

Bergenhus – from royal estate to military fortress

Join us for a walk through 950 years of history, from King Olav Kyrre's Christ Church to the war memorials from World War II. Our walk takes us from King Håkon’s Hall in the ancient royal estate, through the church and monastery areas to King Sverre’s fortress.

School museum 

Scientia potentia est!

Join us at the School Museum and experience life at Norway’s oldest school. In newly restored premises, we present stories about the school’s pupils and teachers through Bergen’s almost 900 years of school history. Knowledge is power!

Leprosy Museum 

Science and human dignity

During this guided tour of the Leprosy Museum, St. Jørgen’s Hospital, you will gain a first-hand impression of the everyday life of leprosy patients through the centuries and learn about infection, isolation and research in bygone days.

300 metres Bergen 

300 metres of Bergen – A walk from the Leprosy Museum, St. Jørgen’s Hospital to the old Latin School

These 300 metres were once the stomping ground of citizens, government officials and poor people. This was where funeral processions passed and the people of Bergen took their stroll in the light summer evenings. The guided tour ends at the newly opened School Museum.

Row your boat 

Grab your oar! (in Norwegian)

In the boat hall at Hordamuseet, you can see one of Norway’s largest collections of clinker-built utility boats. Learn about the boats’ importance for life along the coast and about the boat-building traditions in Western Norway.

There lies a fair land … (in Norwegian)

The innermost part of the Fanafjord attracted hunters and early farmers. On a walk through the open-air area at Hordamuseet, you can see cultural remains like the giant longship boathouse from the Iron Age and settlements from the Stone and Bronze Ages.

BYMUSEET FOR CHILDREN

Take your children on a journey through time and space. Follow in the footsteps of kings and queens. Experience medieval treasures, cannons and eerie dungeons and visit the Regens family in the year 1826.

Bryggens Museum – Look what I found!


What did you find this time? The exhibition ‘Under Ground’ shows some of the small and big treasures the archaeologists have unearthed here at Bryggen. The finds tell stories of life in Bergen more than 500 years ago. The museum offers different activities, and if you have the courage, you can even smell the Middle Ages!

Håkon´s Hall 

Håkon’s Hall – The Hall of Kings!

Join us to see the hall of the king himself! Hundreds of knights and royalty celebrated weddings and coronation ceremonies here for hundreds of years. In the lower storey, we see where the scribes sat writing with their quills, and the king once kept his treasure trove in the cellar! Where these treasures are now, nobody knows, but you’re allowed to look …

Rosenkrantztårnet 

The Rosenkrantz Tower – Kings and cannons!


In the Rosenkrantz Tower, you can climb the steep stairs from room to room and all the way to the top. Through chambers and parlours where the princes and princesses of the Middle Ages lived. In the cellar, you can see the dark and eerie dungeon, and at the top, you find the cannons, ready to be fired against pirates and enemies who were trying to take Bergen.

Old Bergen Museum 

Old Bergen Museum – A trip to great-grandmother’s Bergen

At Old Bergen, the whole family can experience life in the 'good old days'. Here, you can take a stroll peering into the houses, feed the birds, climb the trees and last, but not least, visit the home of the Regens family in the year 1826. Short plays are performed, and fun and games are regularly organised for children. Ice cream and fizzy drinks are sold at the museum shop. Sandviken Sjøbad is located beside the museum. Summer’s here! It’s time to go back in time!

Beffen ferry – Bergen’s most charming boat trip


Go to Old Bergen by boat and get a 20% discount on the admission fee.

Håkonshallen

Bergenhus – from royal estate to military fortress (in Norwegian)

Thursday at 14.00. Did you know that 800 years ago, this area, with Håkon’s Hall, was Norway’s royal palace, where all the important weddings were celebrated? There was also a monastery and many beautiful churches in this area, and many members of royalty were buried in one of them. You can also climb the steps to Sverresborg, one of the very first stone fortresses built in Norway.

Bryggens Museum where Bergen became a city 

Where Bergen became a city (in Norwegian)

Wednesday at 11.30. Bryggen in Bergen has been inhabited for more than 1,000 years. Down below the earth, archaeologists have discovered many objects that tell us about what it was like to live in the Middle Ages. What toys do you think they had, and do you think it was different being a child back then? At the end of our walk, you’ll see ruins that not many people get to see; we enter a door under Nikolaikirkealmenning and look at the remains of Bergen’s first town hall, complete with wine cellar and two dungeons.
